Trends expert William Higham said: “Britons expect – and want – British staples like the monarchy, the BBC, marriage and pubs to continue. But we have embraced innovations like mobile phones, cash machines, fast food, trainers and coffee chains as new traditions we expect to continue in future.”

The monarchy is such an important part of our way of life that Britons think it will be around for ever, a survey has revealed.

Home ownership is top of a list of 25 things that Britons cherish most, with 65 per cent believing it will stand the test of of time. It is followed by the human race, on 56 per cent, the monarchy and the BBC. Researchers compiled the list after surveying almost 2,000 Britons of all ages.

Fast food, coffee shops, CCTV cameras, trainers, marriage and denim were also in the top 10 of the list. The traditional British pub, tattoos and late- running trains are among the 25 items.
